Who will be present?
- Those who survived the tribulation but did not receive the mark of the beast (confirm understanding)
- vs 4a - those who had been given authority to judge (Matthew 19:28 - I assume this will be the apostles, King David will have a prominent place in the millennial earth, ruling over Israel (Isaiah 55:3-5, Jeremiah 30:4-11, Ezekiel 34:23-31, Ezekiel 37:21-28, Hosea 3:5). Note: If they are judging - there must be acts to judge. This is important in understanding who will populate this time period because these people will later receive judgment.
- vs 4b - those who had martyred during the tribulation. [I wondered if this could have been an indication that the Rapture didn't take place before the tribulation but the verse goes on to say that "they came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years. It's curious that vs 5 calls this the "the first resurrection". But those raised to life described in Rapture references says that they will be caught up and meet Jesus in the air. There is no reference to that here so this must be a separate event and not one and the same.] [ Notes from Enduring Word : This is the first resurrection: If the first resurrection is a singular event, it argues well for a post-tribulation rapture, because it implies that all saints receive their resurrection bodies at the same time, immediately before the rule and reign of Jesus Christ. If the first resurrection is an order or class encompassing previously dead believers (who are at once with the Lord), the raptured church (already in heaven), and saints from the Great Tribulation, then the idea fits in a pre-tribulation framework.]
- According to Bibleref Rev 20:4, this period of time will also include all resurrected believers: This verse assures us there will be a resurrection of the wicked dead. It will occur at the end of the millennium (Rev 20:5). The first resurrection that John saw occurs before the millennium. Christ arose as the "firstfruits" (1 Corinthians 15:20), evidence of a future resurrection harvest. The resurrection of church saints before the tribulation comes next (1 Thessalonians 4:13–17), followed by the resurrection of the two faithful witnesses in the middle of the tribulation (Revelation 11:9–12), followed by the resurrection of tribulation martyrs and Old Testament saints at the end of the tribulation (Revelation 20:4; Daniel 12:1–3). All these resurrected believers reign with Christ throughout the millennium. The resurrection described in 1 Corinthians 15:51–55 guarantees believers a brand-new body. It will be incapable of dying or decomposing. It will be like the resurrected body of the Lord (Philippians 3:21). Sin, pain, sorrow, and death will no longer be the experience of believers.
