Pentecost
"When the day of Pentecost came..."
This was planned and orchestrated by God as a foreshadowing of the coming of the Holy Spirit
They were all together in one place and as we learned from Acts 1: 14 "they all joined together constantly in prayer..."
They were waiting in obedience. Were they anticipating the Holy Spirit? I don't get the impression that they were.....or at least they didn't understand exactly. The Holy Spirit wasn't something new to them. What they knew of Him is that He came on a person for a specific period of time and purpose. According to Acts 1:4 it says that while Jesus was eating with them, He instructed them that they would be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Was He just talking to the apostles? Perhaps that thought that the Holy Spirit would only befall them? It just seems that the explanations that Luke provides by quoting Scriptures of Christ's promise of the Holy Spirit that these references are now made as a way of understanding what they NOW understand, NOT what they knew would happen.
Acts 2:1-4 Describe the first occurrence of the Holy Spirit befalling a group of people. He came with no introduction but the time was predicted because it was the day of Pentecost. The occurrence is described as "Suddenly a sound....". The Holy Spirit came upon them as described in vs 4 :All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them."
121 Notes:
Throughout the Bible, we see a theme of God choosing unlikely people to fulfill His mission. He chose Abraham, the old man with no kids, to start a nation. He chose David, the youngest and smallest shepherd, to be a king and warrior. He chose to come as a humble baby to earth. The disciples that were together in today’s passage were not scholars or linguists; they were regular, everyday people. In this one moment, God equipped them in a remarkable way for the mission He had called them to. He filled them with the Holy Spirit and gave them language to communicate with people of the world. The gift of the Holy Spirit to these disciples is the same gift He’s given to equip us for the same calling.
Acts 2:5-13 The Crowds Respond in Bewilderment
There were many Jews in Jerusalem from every nation (vs 5)at this appointed time because Pentecost was one of the feasts commanded by God to be in Jerusalem (REF: ). And these people heard the sound coming from the "upper room" and it drew them out of bewilderment because they heard them speaking in his own language. Now the common language was Greek but they were hearing "the wonders of God) (vs 11) in their own tongue. They were amazed because they knew the men they heard speaking were Galileans (vs 7). As people do when they don't understand something, some people made fun of them by saying they've had too much wine. Who are they talking about....it sounds like the people who were bewildered, amazed and perplexed by hearing the Galileans speaking in their tongue. They must have been drunk and only imagined that.
Acts 2:14- Peter Addresses the Crowd
Peter explains that these men were not drunk but they indeed heard a manifestation and authentication of the Holy Spirit thru tongues (REF: purpose of tongues). This was prophesied by Joel.
Peter goes on to say that
vs 22 "Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs which God did among you ....".
vs 23 He was "handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge.....with the help of wicked men, put Him to death by nailing Him to the cross
vs 24 "But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him.
vs 32 God has raised this Jesus to life and we are all witnesses of the fact.
vs 35 Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
vs 36 Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus whom you crucified both Lord and Christ.:
vs 37 When the people heard this they were cut to the heart and asked "what shall we do?"
vs 38 Peter relied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
[What is absent from this that contradicts charismatic doctrine is asking "Do you want to received the Holy Spirit" which is what you would expect if the invitation was a second grace.
vs 40 With many other words he warned them and he pleaded with them
vs 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized and about 3000 were added to their number that day [Their baptism is non descriptive....it just follows the command to be baptized so I would assume that they did receive the Holy Spirit that day!
Vs 42-47 Fellowship of Believers
vs 43 "Everyone was filled with awe and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles."
vs 47 "....and the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."
