But God did not call on His people toforge alliances for protection....especially pagan nations. He is able to protect His people.
In that day, Hezekiah was King of Judah. According to 2 Kings 18: 3-7 "He did what was rith in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Aherah poles. He broke into piecs the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Isralites had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushan). Hezekiah trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel.....He held fast to the Lord and did not stop following Him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses. And the Lord was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. "
According to 2 Kings 18:9-37 The king of Assyria, during this time, also attacked and overtook Samaria and deported the people to Assyria. This happened because the Northern Kingdom was disobedient and had not obeyed the Lord's command. Ten years later, the King of Assyria attacked "all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them." King Hezekiah offered to pay off the King of Assyria in response to this. But the King of Assyria rebuked Hezekiah and mocked God saying "Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me? How then can the Lord deliver Jerusalem from my hand?" (vs 35).
2 Kings 19: Hezekiah went to Isaiah and asks, "Did the Lord your God hear what the King Assyria said to ridicule the living God? Isaiah reported: This is what the Lord says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard - those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. Listen! When he hears a certain report, I will make him want to return to his own country and there I willhave him cut down with the sword."
vs 10- 13 But the king of Assyria responded with threats and said that the god of the other countries that he attacked were not strong enough to stand up to him.
vs 14-19 Hezekiah went to the temple to pray: "Lord, the God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Give ear, Lord, and hear, open your eyes, Lord, adn see, listen to the words Semnacherib (king of Assyria) has sent to ridicule the living God......Now Lord our god, deliver us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, Lord, are God."
vs 20 -34 Isaiah then prophesied confirmation of His faithful promises and also against the king of Assyria saying:
: Once more a remnant of the kingdom of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. He [the king of Assyria] will not enter this city...he will return; he will not enter this city, declares the Lord. I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant."
vs 35 - 17 indicates that the angel fo the Lord when out and put to death 185,000 in the Assyrian camp. So the king of Assyria withdrew and returned to Nineveh where he was killed by his sons.
