We find a similar call to remove obstructions in Hebrews 12:1, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."
vs 13c-14
"But whoever takes refuge in Me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain."
And it will be said:
"Build up, build up, prepare teh road! Remove teh obstacles out of the way of my people."
- Using the same imagery as Isaiah 35:8, which describes a highway for God’s people, meaning a raised road that is above all obstacles. Build up refers to the building of this road, so that God’s people can return to Him without obstacle.
- Whatever gets in the way of our getting right with God must be taken out of the way.
- Spiritual roadbuilding requires the removal of obstructions.
- Even when the people were weary from the effects of these sins, they didn't see the hopelessness of their ways. (Isaiah 57:10) They persisted in fearing counterfeits instead of God.
- To race back home to God, we must prepare the way. After we have turned our back on sin, we turn our face toward God.
This reminds me of John's message of "Prepare the way for the Lord".
vs 15
For this is what the high and exalted One says - He who lives forever, whose name is holy: "I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite."
- This means coming to Him humbly. (1 Peter 5:6) God lives in a high and holy place, but He dwells with the contrite and lowly.
- When we admit that we've taken the wrong road and turn around, God welcomes the wayward back into relationship.
vs 16
"I will not accuse them forever, nor will I always be angry, for then they would faint away because of me - the very people I have created."
- God will find a way to acquit them - not just drop the charges
Vs 18-19a
"I have seen their ways but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to Israel's mourners, creating praise on thier lips"
- He promises to heal, lead and restore comfort as He shows us the way home to Him.
- We too can take a spiritual road trip home to God by clearing the obstacles of sin and preparing the way with humble hearts.
- Isaiah, Jeremiah (31:31,33) and Ezekiel (36:26) all saw a time coming when a sick, disobedient, hard-hearted people will be supernaturally changed.
